Conductor wanted

Renaissance Voices welcomes applications for the position of Conductor

Application deadline: January 31, 2012

The Choir (http://www.renaissancevoices.com/)

Renaissance Voices, a Winnipeg-based choir of about 24 skilled amateur singers, was formed in 1995 by founder and conductor, Derek Morphy, to perform music of the 16th and early 17th centuries. This period remains a primary focus, but the ensemble has extended its repertoire range into many other choral genres. Much of the repertoire the choir sings is rehearsed and performed a cappella.

Each Advent, it has been the choir’s custom to present a program exploring a particular aspect of the season, with, for example, “Faith Stories and Legends” in 2010, “Frost and Fire” in 2009, “Reflections in a Stable” in 2008, and “Wolcum Yole”, featuring Britten's Ceremony of Carols, in 2007. Spring concerts have recently focussed on Renaissance composers, such as Tomas Luis de Victoria in 2008 and William Byrd in 2007. Our 2010 concert “Parody and Whimsy” featured choral works with a decidedly humorous twist.

Renaissance Voices has taken part in several collaborative choral enterprises over the years. Our association with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet has included choral work for productions of Dracula and Carmina Burana. And, in December of 2008, we joined the Winnipeg Singers and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in an acclaimed performance of John Rutter's Magnificat.

This past year, Renaissance Voices released a CD, called “Joy Shall Be Yours”, of Christmas selections taken from live performances over a number of years.

The Position

The Conductor of Renaissance Voices is responsible for selecting choristers and repertoire in consultation with the Recruitment and Program Committees of the Choir. She/he conducts all rehearsals and performances of the choir, normally ten rehearsals of two to three hours in length for, typically, a two-performance Advent concert and a single performance spring concert. The Conductor is also available for occasional promotional activity.

The successful applicant will be an outstanding choral conductor, knowledgeable about and experienced with skilled singers with mature voices. He/she should be capable of motivating and inspiring choristers in further development in choral technique and performance skills, and have a thorough knowledge of the choral repertoire. The Conductor must also possess the requisite skills to collaborate and work effectively with the volunteer committees and other bodies, such as the Manitoba Choral Association, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and other choirs.

The Conductor of Renaissance Voices will be assisted by well-organized volunteer choir-based committees, including an Executive Committee and committees for Recruitment, Program Development, Concert Planning, Venue and Publicity.

The position pays a modest stipend, subject to negotiation. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, living in Canada.

Application

If you believe you are the right person for this position, please submit a letter of interest, resume and three references no later than January 31, 2012 to:

Ms Karen Tole-Henderson, 83 Celtic Bay, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 2W8

or by e-mail.
