Summer choral conducting intensive

July 17-23, 2013

Application deadline: May 1, 2013

Fikamusik refers to an approach to professional development for choral conductors which centres on the formation of self and community while pursuing individual musical growth. The format of the program is highly interactive, and is structured with the goal of making connections between multiple facets of choral musicianship. Daily activities include lecture sessions that cover aspects of vocal techniques and performance practice such as resonance, diction, and repertoire selection. Participants will be introduced to innovative rehearsal techniques, advanced gesture and body mapping principles, and will conduct a professional ensemble.

In addition to a focus on skill development, the course is structured around the collaborative exploration of personal musical narratives at regular coffee sessions, or fika, during which conductors are invited to share their experiences and come to articulate their assumptions, beliefs, values, and understandings regarding the practice of choral conducting. The hope is to create a learning environment which is supportive and collaborative, yet challenging and enriching for professionals and educatiors alike.

  • Alignment through body mapping
  • Master classes with professional choir
  • Individual coaching
  • Fika discussions
  • Innovative rehearsal techniques
  • Expanding repertoire
  • Daily singing
  • Advanced gesture
  • Vocal techniques lecture sessions: Respiration, Phonation, Resonance, Diction
