Meet our new Executive Director

MCA is pleased to announce that Jenny Steinke-Magnus has been hired as our new Executive Director.

Jenny comes highly qualified, with a reputation for bringing a positive energy and enthusiasm to organizations she works with. Throughout her career she has held roles for non-profit organizations in the areas of communications, event management, administration and human resource management. Jenny has worked closely with non-profit boards including a term as President of Rainbow Harmony Project. Her extensive experience in organizing and managing events including concerts, fundraisers, professional development and choir retreats has grown through positions with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, Canadian Lutheran World Relief, and Strauss event & association management.

Jenny earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French linguistics from the University of Winnipeg and a Master of Arts in French Studies from Simon Fraser University, where she received several awards of distinction, including the coveted Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Jenny has a passion for choral singing. She has been involved in Manitoba’s choral scene as singer and administrator since her youth. In her words: “Choir has played a central role in my life for many years, and I am thrilled to work for an association that is dedicated to serving the choral community and supporting choral music development and appreciation in Manitoba.”

We are thrilled to welcome Jenny in her new role.

In Memoriam: Karen Giesbrecht

Manitoba Choral Association is mourning the sudden passing of board member Karen Giesbrecht. Karen served as Chair of the Marketing and Communications Committee, Editor of Noteworthy, and was President of the Central Manitoba Choral Association.

Karen was a dynamo. Her energy and drive made you pick up your heels and get involved, and she tackled new projects with a gusto that was both inspiring and enviable. She was an enthusiastic board member who was always willing to think big and bring new ideas to the table.

Karen has been an impressive choral presence in the Central Manitoba Region where she taught for over thirty years. Her reputation was solidified through her many years of success at Winkler Elementary School, and she spoke so passionately about her students and current program at Northlands Parkway Collegiate. A strong community collaborator, she recently founded the choir Prairie Soundscape with Co-director Melanie Urichuk for young adults. Her choral plate was always full and she sought new opportunities and challenges at every turn.

We are grieving as a choral community and send our support and hope for great strength in these times to Karen’s family, friends, and colleagues. We have in our thoughts, especially, the many singers who were fortunate enough to be touched by her passion for choral music and thrive under her musical care. MCA is so very lucky to have experienced Karen’s leadership and her absence will be keenly felt.

A memorial service for Karen will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church. A public devotional will take place at 7:30pm on Monday, September 23 at Emmanuel Mennonite Church. For more details on the Karen’s service, please click here.
