Shape Notes Singing: Sacred Harp Singing

Part of Crescent Fort Rouge United Church’s Artfest 2017

Sacred Harp brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems.  It is not affiliated with any denomination although it often proves to be a deeply spiritual experience for all involved. The style of singing is called ‘shape note singing’ because the music uses note heads in four distinct shapes to aid in sight-reading.  ‘Sacred harp’ is a term used for the human voice - the musical instrument you were given at birth.  We welcome beginners and newcomers, with no musical experience.  Every session is a unique event with a different group of participants. The singers sit with one voice part on each side of a square facing the middle.  Visitors are welcome as listeners.

Sacred Harp singing is the punk rock of choral music, fiery, visceral and LOUD.  No experience is needed.  Just bring your voice and enthusiasm.  Well-known Montreal musician and CKUT radio host Dara Weiss will lead you through this exhilarating and unique experience.
